Near the small village of Peccia, located in the upper Maggia Valley (Val Lavizzara), is Switzerland’s largest marble quarry. Appropriately, in 2021, the Centro Internazionale di scultura di Peccia (CIS) opened here. Among the various training offers, CIS runs an Artists in Residence program, designed to allow carefully selected emerging sculptors, chosen by a jury of experts, to dedicate six months to their work in this peaceful alpine setting surrounded by imposing rock faces.
From May to October 2023, the Korean artist Minhee Kim was hosted by CIS, her stay in Ticino made possible through Majid’s support, following a referral by the Peccia Sculpture Foundation. Minhee sees the material she works with, shaping it, as a way to connect with an ancient, never-lived past, making sculpture a means to translate stories preserved in stone into the present moment characterized by a profound communion between humans and nature. The Majid Foundation sincerely hopes this period will be an important source of artistic inspiration for Minhee’s future sculpting career while fostering the cultural exchange inherent in all artistic expression.
